At Smile for Life Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we believe that prevention is an essential part to our patients’ dental health. That is why we are proud to offer sealants and cavity prevention treatments as part of our wide range of services.
Sealants are a great way to protect your teeth from cavities and decay. They prevent bacteria and food particles from getting stuck in the crevices of teeth, which could lead to plaque buildup and cavities if left unchecked. Sealants are made up of a thin layer of plastic material painted on the surface of teeth—usually premolars and molars (the back teeth). This layer creates a barrier that prevents food particles from settling into the grooves and pits on the surface of the teeth. Sealants are typically used for children, but they can also be used on adults who are prone to cavities or have deep grooves in their teeth that make them more vulnerable to decay.
In addition to sealants, we also offer cavity prevention treatments such as fluoride varnish and preventive resin restorations. Fluoride varnish is a professional-strength fluoride treatment that helps protect tooth enamel from plaque and acids and can help prevent cavities. A preventive resin restoration (PRR) is a small filling made up of composite material that seals off areas where tooth decay has started but hasn’t had time to spread too far. PRRs can stop decay in its tracks before it becomes more serious and requires extensive treatments.
