CPAP Alternatives

Are you feeling the effects of sleep apnea? Many people are unaware that they are suffering from this condition, and if left untreated it can lead to serious health complications. Sleep apnea is a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack, and other illnesses. Treatment commonly prescribed by physicians include using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines which provide air pressure to keep your airways open through the night. While CPAP is an effective treatment option for many, not everyone finds it comfortable or convenient.

For those who struggle with using CPAP machines, there are alternatives available which may be a better fit for their lifestyle. At Smile for Life Family & Cosmetic Dentistry we understand how important it is to get quality restful sleep, and we would like to provide our clients with information about CPAP Alternatives that are available.

Mouthpieces and Oral Appliances:
  • This type of treatment involves the use of a custom-fitted mouthpiece or oral appliance worn during sleep. The device works by positioning your lower jaw slightly forward to help keep your airway open throughout the night.
  • Patients who opt for this form of treatment typically find it more comfortable and convenient than CPAP machines.
  • It is important to note that these treatments require visits to both a physician and dentist in order to get an accurate diagnosis and fit for the appliance.
Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) Therapy:
  • This type of therapy is similar to CPAP except that it provides pressure through a mask fitted only over your nose.
  • PAP machines are quieter than CPAP and some people find them more comfortable.
  • It is important to note that PAP machines require regular maintenance and filter cleaning in order for them to continue to work effectively.
Surgery:
  • In certain cases, surgery may be an option for treating sleep apnea. Depending on the individual’s specific condition, surgery can involve removing excess tissue or reshaping the bones of the upper jaw, soft palate, uvula and/or tonsils.
  • The goal of this procedure is to enlarge the airway and improve sleep quality.
  • It is important to note that surgery can be a lengthy and expensive process.

The decision to choose an alternative to CPAP treatment should not be taken lightly, and there are many things to consider before making any decisions. It is essential that you consult with your physician or dentist in order for them to determine which form of treatment would best suit your needs.
