At Smile for Life Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we are passionate about the health and wellbeing of all our patients. When it comes to dental or facial injuries, timely and proper treatment is essential in restoring a healthy smile. We understand how traumatic these experiences can be, so we take every measure to ensure that our clients receive the highest quality care with minimal discomfort.
When it comes to dental and facial injuries, there are many different types of trauma that require specialized attention. These include:
- Tooth Fractures: A tooth fracture occurs when a tooth chips or breaks due to an external force such as contact sports or a fall. Treatment may involve bonding, crowns and/or root canals, even a dental implant depending on the severity of the fracture.
- Tooth Sensitivity: Teeth can become sensitive for many reasons. The nerve may become hypersensitive after a dental injury. The severity and duration of this sensitivity is a clue about what treatment may be required.
- Tooth Mobility: Teeth roots are not actually fused to your jawbone, but connected by a ligament that acts like a shock absorber for the teeth when you chew. If this ligament is injured, the tooth may feel loose or sore to apply pressure. A dentist must evaluate to determine the cause of mobility, and treatment may range from simply monitoring the tooth to surgical stabilization.
- Dislodged Tooth: A tooth may actually become completely dislodged from the tooth socket from a dental injury. In this case, rinse the tooth with milk or diluted salt water, and reimplant the tooth yourself as soon as possible. If you do not feel comfortable reimplanting the tooth yourself, preserve the tooth in a small container of milk or diluted salt water, and call our office immediately.
- Facial Trauma: Can occur due to an accident, sports injury, or physical altercation. Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and may include repair of broken bones, soft tissue repair, and reconstructive surgery.
